Prostate Problems

February 4th, 2009

Men over 40 may start experiencing problems with their prostate (frequency in urinating is one). Of course, one step to take is have your doctor do a prostate exam. There are two factors in determining a healthy prostate — PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) and BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy).

Each year about 500,000 men are diagnosed with BPH compared to approximately 180,000 of men who are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer (PC). although over 30,000 men die a year from PC very few die from BPH.

One of the major causes of high BPH and PC is increased levels of DHT (Dihydrotesterone). Try to follow guidelines below. If you have a family history of PC, please get checked yearly or as recommended by your physician. If your PSA is below 1.0 mg/ml. test every 2 – 3 years.

Eat plenty of high lignan oils/foods, e.g., flax oil w/lignans and or sesame oil w/lignans, pumpkin oil (for bladder support) cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts), lycopene found in cooked tomatoes (may inhibit tumor cell proliferation), pumpkin seeds, berries and very little meat. Decrease your intake of white flour and white sugar.

Several companies put out very good products in capsules or softgels which contain some of the aforementioned, i.e., Jarrow Prostate Optimizer, Life Extension’s Ultra Natural Prostate, or Solaray Prostate Defense. I highly recommend supplementing if you’re not eating right.

Anemia in Men

January 6th, 2009

Why would a man be anemic when he looks perfectly healthy, eats enough iron rich foods, exercises and is of average or above normal weight? Usually, I suggest they see their doctor and I ask them if they are taking aspirins and/or other over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. Other than a serious illness, this is the most common reason for internal bleeding. Bleeding is sometimes seen in stools or urine, but usually it’s not visible until it becomes worse.

Many overdue the recommended dosages and this can become very dangerous. I have met several people who needed blood transfusions. Some people are just very sensitive and should not use any anti-inflammatories at all.

One Medical Doctor said to avoid the aforementioned problem visit your local Health Food store and talk to the Natural Health Practioner who will help you with natural alternatives.

I recommend Designs for Health Inflammatone, Jarrow Curcumin or New Chapter Zflamend just to name a few.

High Protein Diets

December 10th, 2008

Many body builders are leaving out important nutrients from their diet, e.g., leafy greens, fruits and whole grains. Keep in mind while you are on high protein diets, which will help you lose fat and keep lean muscle you may be robbing your body of important minerals. Your body will not produce alkaline without vegetables therefore it will rob calcium out of your bones causing possible crystallization causing kidney stones.

Here are several products that help alkalize your body are the following:

MSM, Glutamine, Acid-A-Cal and Green Vibrance.
